Happy birthday mummy!
today's my mum's birthday!
it's been a pretty interesting day.
My domestic helper's friend was frantically calling her today because some NEA guy came and fined her employer $1000 for finding 6 mosquito eggs in a pail outside their home. (landed property)
She was so anxious that her employer would send her home that she couldn't concentrate on her work the whole day.
I am laughing at the fact that 6 measely mosquitoes are going to cost her employer $1000 but at the same time, i'm sympathetic by the real chance of her friend going home too...
Seems like a unilateral dependency doesn't it? We take for granted that our domestic helper is 'dispensable' and replaceable. What if one day no one is there for us to hire anymore? What would we do?
Reminds me of the story in Neil Gaiman's Babycakes. If all the animals and plants are gone - what will we eat, where will we test our drugs, what will we wear?
Hahaha...i'm saying this because it reminds me starkly of what my mum always used to say - Don't take things for granted.
Indeed...we only miss the wonderful gestures our partners do for us after we break up. we only appreciate housework when we do it for ourselves. we only find food more delicious when you discover the effort taken to pull a dinner together.
Singaporeans only realise the value of food, when they study and realise how vulnerable we really are to food shortages. Naming ourselves a foodies haven - is a paradox indeed O.O
