People have mid-life crisis because after working for so long, they realised that this is not what they want and desperately find something which they want to do. However, after a while, they realise they are also too old to "want to do" anything and find it hard to fulfil their dreams. They feel depressed, and upset about life. So the typical mid-life crisis man would be a one with a beer belly and a fancy sports car that should belong to someone less twice his age.
