Bread and Butter
Have you ever visited those bread carts as a child? The uncle would have a shelf with all kinds of breads that are plain and u can choose whether you want kaya/butter to go with it. Even if it's in the middle of a busy road with cars whizzing past with fumes from exhaust, the bread never fails to perfume the air around the cart.
My dad brought my grandma and i to whampoa hawker centre to have lunch last saturday.
After that, my dad brought us to a nearby Hainan bread shop. It's really old-school, with a great big black oven and stacks of chared bread in a rundown shop. BUT! never judge a bakery by it's appearance people!
When i alighted from the car...the AROMA of the bread hit me in the face. like smack right into the olfactory portions of my brain.
The ironic part is the the more chared the bread is, the more appetising it seems to be (to me at least). My grandma decided to buy a loaf to try.
...and we returned to the hospital where we decided to go with curry later for dinner!
So while i peeled the bread, it is like, trust me on this, cotton wool. HAVE YOU TOUCHED BREAD THAT SOFT? GOSH GOSH GOSH! I think i'm having a bread-high..
I held the whole loaf in my arms and the first instinct was not to eat, but to hug it like a pillow...aww. it's also mighty thick - like at least 1.5 inches.
People, i'm swearing off Gardenia, Bonjour and Sunshine - this is the bread that i'll eat from now on.
Did i mention they contain no salt, no preservatives but have an excessive dose of tender loving care? They're cheaper too! $1.30 a loaf!
