urgh...heavy
okay...the downside my a mac - it's heavy....i tot 2.2kg was okay. IT IS NOT.
so i was reading kristelle's blog about how nice if a hurricane was named after a guy for once. today in class, i learnt the history of naming hurricans and WHY it's Hurrican Gustav and not, well, Guineve.
so last time, in the 1950s, a book called Storm was published by this author, whose name i cannot recall. But in that story, the hero (meterologist) named the hurricane, the focal of the story after his girlfriend. so what happened after the publish of the book was that meterologists in america started naming hurricanes too in alphabetical order. so every year you had 26 names prepared in a collection of names which will be used for that year. If the hurricane was so destructive, its name is never repeated. So for instance you won't be seeing Katrina again.
In those times, they only had female names. People protested that it was politically incorrect. Then they added male names, alternating the females'. Hahaaha...then later, people protested against the exclusive use of anglo-saxxon names ie. Ivan, Joseph etc. The meterologists then later added Hispanic names and now, you even have Asian names for hurricanes in the Indian ocean. There was even a hurricane Durian!
so there lies the history of naming hurricanes. Previously, meterologist referred to hurricans by latitudes and longitudes. They actually adopted the naming system because it was less complicated. (like DUH?)
hahahaha....and it all started with the witty author of a popular book to make the life of geography students easier.
